Great post, and an important topic. I'm definitely in the keep work separate camp. Maybe it's my age, or the fact that I want to stay focused on professional topics. Inappropriate behavior showing up on Facebook is not an issue for me, (it's been 20 years since I've even seen a bong - unlike Mr. Phelps), but the more common issues of politics and religion can also cause problems. While I have strong views on both subjects, I've never seen the point in debating these topics on the Web. Do know anyone who's changed their views in these areas after reading a
    blog post?

    Good post, and good thoughts.
I think we will see the the social media environment become more of a communication medium and a movement. The culture already has its customs and etiquette, although fluid and evolving.
What I believe you are pointing to is evolution of social media skills, focused into an online identity, that reveals information appropriate to the medium, but not too much to be personally threatening. Much like I put on my "game face" when I go out and play church softball.
    Keep up the good blog.
